Only 5 minutes away from Golden Beach is located the village Panagia, a small village which once was the principal town of Thassos. It took its name from the church called Panagia, which is The Virgin Mairy. The church contains artifacts dating back to the times of the Holy Crusades and many holy relics. The present day church was built in 1882.
The villagers have kept the traditional Greek style of housing and customs. A walk through the narrow streets will take you back through the history of the island.

Just right behind the old port, there is a sandy and shallow beach, prized with a Blue Flag, with beach bars, cafeterias and taverns. Thassos town is also the commercial center of the island.
